Samoan Posts #1
It will be difficult to sum up the total Samoan experience in the writing of the blog, so I will try to do it in three different parts. We highly encourage you to ask your friends/sons/daughters about this experience as you read through some of these words.
Week #1: Lava lavas, Safua Hotel, The Sights
The first part of our journey to Samoa was a time to behold some of the Samoan sights, the people, and the culture. We flew into Apia, the largest Samoan city on the larger of the two main Samoan islands, Upolu. From here we stayed a short time and then made our way to Savai'i by ferry ride.
Savai'i Students visited the Western-most part of the world, tramped around some powerful ocean blow holes, explored unexplained archaeological sites, swam in crystalline freshwater pools, walked around the edge of volcanic craters, beheld flying foxes (some of the world's largest bats!), and even bumped their heads to bass driven Samoan music on the public buses.
If you ever hear the word "lava lava," it refers to a traditional Samoan article of clothing. It is basically a sheet wrapped around the waste of the wearer, akin to a skirt. Men and women both wear it. We all wore lava lavas day in and day out throughout our time in Samoa.
