Our first week of Sustainable Community Development introduced some key issues and used Belize as a case study for tourism-led development. We enjoyed hearing from local owners of ecotourism lodges and also heard a range of speakers on the cruise ship industry. We also visited the Communiy Baboon Sanctuary, a grassroots ecotourism organization that protects howler monkey habitat within participating towns. There was one troop of monkeys that has become quite accustomed to visitors and were not at all shy about swinging down on their prehensile tails to eat right out of our hands!
