Sustainable Community Development 2
The second week of Sustainable Community Development opened the discussion up to macro-level issues in development. With Jonathan Warner from Dordt College at the helm, we were in good hands looking at globalization, markets, and economic development in Belize. We headed up North to look at the Corozal district as a case study and to gain some new cultural experiences homestaying with families in the Patchakan community. The three main economic influences on the Corozal area are the Corozal Free Zone (a retail and export processing zone), Papaya export agriculture and Sugar growing and processing for the EU. We had field trips in all three areas and learned immense amounts about the opportunities and challenges facing the Corozal area. We are grateful to our many excellent tour guides, guest speakers and host families who shared with us. Thanks Jonathan for explaining complicated economics so clearly and for teaching us how to drink a proper cup of English tea!

i would like to take this time to give a little shout out to emily carlson. yo emily, what's up? i just got back from the Lancaster Flower symposium with my mom where the focus for the day was perennial native plants, and tender perennials mostly from the 6B climatic zone, so not tropical, but the kind that will overwinter nicely in a greenhouse. redeeming houseplants for you and me. i think we just got the mad hook-ups with a wildflower nursery dealer up in New Hope, and it looks like she is thoroughly excited about returning the landscape of Camden back toward the perennial native edibles. mmm...flowering native edibles. . .the next edition of the "Another World is Possible" video just got released, focused on creation and the process. there's some sweet footage of the gardens and a little delware river floatin. i'll try and send it your way. i think there will be some people down there who would get a kick out of it as well. we had the potato planting party yesterday for st. patrick's day, and had quite the time with so many people coming to get down. it was followed-up by a smore smacking fire in the bread oven, secret trick would be the peanut butter cup. in light of the chances of overloading the internet, i shall refrain from going into this too much deeper, but i have one last question, have you found sastun?
