Forest Ecology
Our second course was Forest Ecology and it was a full week and a half! We started out down a very bumpy road to get to Las Cuevas Research Station (Spanish for “The Caves”). Las Cuevas was a great place to study the tropical moist forest and learn on the trails of a forest dominated by bay leaf palms. After staying a couple of days at the research station we headed to Caracol for some birding and also to appreciate the largest Mayan temple in Belize ringed by dense forest. We were thrilled to have some close encounters with howler monkeys. The later half of the week was spent at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, where we investigated the components of a tropical forest further. Cockscomb is a gorgeous place and we were also able to cool off in the waterfalls during our breaks. During this week we enjoyed guest speakers on jaguars, park establishment and management, herbal medicine, and more.
